Lüneburg - A Town Built on Salt
The fact that salt was ever able to be extracted in Lüneburg is due to a salt deposit lying close beneath the surface of Lüneburg's Old Town. When extracted from the groundwater it was at first a 27% saline solution, from which the salt was then boiled out using the leaden pans at the saline. The final result was pure salt, which was then shipped out via Lübeck. The saline was in operation for over 1000 years before being shut down in 1980. The effects of salt extraction can still be marvelled at to this day - on the way to the saline you will be confronted by curved buildings and crooked walls. You can discover the history of salt in Lüneburg at the German Salt Museum, while at "SaLü" - Lüneburg's hot salt springs - the effervescent saltwater provides you with fun and relaxation.
Shopping with Flair
Shopping and Lüneburg - a perfect combination. You are invited to go on an extensive shopping spree in stylish gabled buildings, medieval laneways and lively pedestrian zones with their countless well-stocked retail shops. Far from sterile shopping centres and mundane shopping strips, these specialty shops and department stores offer everything your heart desires. Several centrally-located parking garages allow for a stress-free shopping tour. There is also Sunday trading a few times a year.
Lüneburg's Pub Life
On warm days, Lüneburg displays an almost Mediterranean flair, especially in the evening, when young and old, locals and visitors all cavort in the town's pubs and restaurants. Lüneburg boasts the second-highest number of pubs per square metre in Europe after Madrid. Two stretches of bars invite you to stroll past or linger around: One of the streets is "Am Stintmarkt", where you will find Lüneburg's longest continuous row of pubs. The other is Schröderstrasse, a favourite shopping strip, where you can sip a coffee in one of the many bars while watching the city buzz. Many a secret insider location is also waiting to be discovered behind brick facades and in the romantic backyards found in the Old Town's medieval laneways.
