Events in Lüneburg
There is much to celebrate in and around Lüneburg. Every year, entertainment and fun are guaranteed at the Lüneburger Sülfmeistertage (Lüneburg Salt Master Festival), a great medieval spectacle all about salt held in Lüneburg every October. Music permeates the air during the Lüneburg town fair, the largest regional festival, in June. The Children’s Festival in July transforms the Hanseatic town into a true paradise of fun and play for our little visitors. Experience all this and much more in the salt and Hanseatic town of Lüneburg. We look forward to seeing you!
Sunday is a day of rest in Germany. But four times a year, the shops in Lüneburg open their doors on Sunday. Each of these four special Shopping Sundays has a specific theme. Have a look in our event calendar and type in "Erlebnis-Sonntag" to find out the upcoming dates.
Lüneburg Caravan Festival

Lüneburg Spring Market
The annual "Lüneburger Frühjahrsmarkt" (Lüneburg Spring Market) held on the Sülzwiesen (salt marshes) at the end of April fills you with the joy of spring. The carousel, candy floss, coconut shy (with a stack of empty tins instead) and much more: there’s certainly something for all ages.
Lüneburg City Festival
Every June Lüneburg celebrates the Lüneburger Stadtfest (Lüneburg City Festival). The entire town and its guests enjoy this fantastic festival with lots of music, games, fun and sport for young and old, as well as craftwork and local cuisine for three whole days.
Lüneburg Children’s Festival
During the annual Lüneburger Kinderfest (Lüneburg Children’s Festival), Lüneburg’s town centre is transformed into a summer playground for the little ones. Held in July, this festival with its many exciting activities will once again make children’s eyes sparkle with delight.
The Oktoberfest is not only held in Munich! Every year in September, we celebrate the largest Oktoberfest in northern Germany on the Lüneburg Sülzwiesen (salt marshes). Hundreds of visitors enjoy the authentic ‘Wiesn’ atmosphere.
Lüneburg Salt Master Festival
In Lüneburg, modernity is just as important as our affinity with tradition. The Sülfmeister (master salters), who were of crucial importance for salt mining and, consequently, the fame and wealth of the town, were highly respected in the Middle Ages. Lüneburg holds a major festival in their honour towards the end of September or the beginning of October every year.
The Clubs Night in November is an opportunity to watch great live music performances by local and national bands in Lüneburg’s clubs and pubs. Music fans can enjoy and dance to a variety of music genres in a convivial atmosphere.
Christmas City Lüneburg
At Christmas time, Lüneburg residents decorate their gables, bathing the entire town in a soft glow. The scents of mulled wine and deep-fried sweet pastries of the various romantic Christmas markets dotted around the town transform it into a veritable ‘Christmas town’ from the end of November until just before Christmas.
Historical Christmas Market
The historical Christmas market around the St Michaelis church is truly an Advent highlight in Lüneburg. It is held yearly, at the beginning of December, and transforms the alleys and corners of the old town into the ideal setting for an entertaining Renaissance spectacle.
